This is an important step, because the more material you gather the more conclusive your memory book will be. If you are doing this at the behest of relatives or friends, you'll need to get as much help from them as you possible can and give yourself time enough to do the work. If you, for instance operate a funeral home and have recently added memorial books to your list of services, you may want to consider hiring someone full time to do this work, or finding an independent contractor that you can depend on. These books are meant to be permanent bookshelf additions, and lots of people will see them, so it will pay in the long run to put out the best and most complete finished product that you can.
